Categories

The Building of the Year awards are presented annually at the Frame Building Expo. Builders may win in the following categories:

  • Agricultural Storage and/or Workshops
  • Commercial (under 5,000 sq. ft.)
  • Commercial (5,000-10,000 sq. ft.)
  • Commercial (more than 10,000 sq. ft.)
  • Hobby Shops
  • Horse Barns / Facilities (under 3,000 sq. ft.)
  • Horse Barns / Facilities (3,000 - 10,000 sq. ft.)
  • Horse Barns / Facilities (more than 10,000 sq. ft.)
  • Housing / Homes/ Residential (homes, apartments, other single or multi-family dwellings)
  • Industrial (manufacturing and processing facilities)
  • Institutional (Churches, Schools, Non-Profit, Government and other public buildings)
  • Livestock Facilities
  • Retrofit / Remodel (renovation and remodel of existing buildings)
  • Suburban Garages (residential garages only)

*Commercial categories may include retail establishments such as shops, repair, hotels, motels, warehousing and retail outlets besides strip malls. Do not include commercial buildings that may also fit in another category such as "Agricultural Storage and/or Workshops," "Industrial" or "Institutional."

Judge's Award

  • Most Unique Post-Frame Application
  • Best Engineering
  • Commercial Unique
  • Judge's Special

Judges only may select these awards, which are awarded to entries that do not win in any category.

Benefits of Winning

Winners will be notified in January and are expected to register for and attend the Frame Building Expo Awards Luncheon to accept their award.

All Building of the Year winners will be displayed at the annual convention, Frame Building Expo, and on the NFBA website.

All entries that are not selected as a first place winner in any of the other defined categories will be considered for the Judges' Special Award (recognized for excellent exterior photography), Most Unique Post-Frame Application (a building that is not typical for post frame), Commercial Unique (a commercial building that is unique in appearance), and the Engineering Award (a building that met unique or unusual engineering challenges in a creative way).

All non-winning entries will receive a Certificate of Merit.

Entry Requirements

  • Any building designed and erected in a safe manner by an NFBA member builder that utilizes post-frame construction (defined below) in a minimum of 50% of the building structure will be eligible.

  • Definition:A post-frame building is most clearly defined by its wide column spacing with rafters and/or trusses to create distinct “post-frames.” Columns may or may not be ground-embedded. Mortise and tendon connections typical of timber frame construction are not considered post-frame by this definition.

  • Buildings must have been completed during the current year (2011), and have an erector/contractor who has been an NFBA member builder at least 6 months prior to the contest. Any entry found to have been completed prior to January 1, 2011 will forfeit all materials, including the entry fee, submitted to NFBA in the application process.

  • It is the obligation of the applicant to check the appropriate box on the entry form to indicate which specific category the building(s) is being entered into.

  • Completed entries must be submitted devoid of any staples, presentation folders, or three ring binders.

  • To be considered you must complete EACH item on the official nomination form

  • Entries received that do not contain all required materials will be disqualified.

  • Any NFBA company or branch is eligible to win, but is limited to one 1st place award per company branch in any or all outlined categories.

  • All decisions by the judges are final.
